CASE STUDY | Catbird Hotel

March 4, 2022
Catbird Hotel was designed to be an innovative new concept in the extended stay market. “We believe that traditional extended-stay hotels lack character and soul, so we got our inspiration from well-designed residences, the world’s best lifestyle hotels, and multipurpose furniture seen in luxury yachts,” says William M. Balinbin, principal of development at Sage Investments and executive team member of Sage Studio1.
The hotel interiors feature a hip modern vibe, designed by Sage Studio and DLR group.  The rooms include an array of multi-functional furniture, including a Loft Bed that features a roll-out desk/table and wardrobe units. The bed platform itself is 44 inches off the ground and accessed by a lighted staircase and perimeter walkway.

COLLABORATION
The Loft Bed, as well as several other key furniture pieces, presented some unique design, engineering, and manufacturing challenges. But we were excited to take on this project as our team saw this is as a great opportunity to flex our collaborative muscles and utilize Design Visualization. We created numerous 3D models and drawings to help better understand design intent and work through many details with the DLR design team.
PROTOTYPING, TESTING, AND QUALITY CONTROL
Remember Spring 2020? That’s when our industry, as well as our lives, were up ended by Covid 19. That also happen to be when the Loft Bed model room sample was being developed! Many of our internal meetings had to be held virtually as team members worked remotely. Once the Loft Bed sample was received into our warehouse, the internal review had to be conducted virtually as well! Throughout production, we also relied on video and photo reviews from our factory as part of our prototyping and quality control process.
